茂名是全球闻名的“中国荔乡”，拥有2300多年的荔枝栽培历史，全市荔枝种植面积约143万亩，早熟、中熟、迟熟荔枝品种81个，全产业链年产值超120亿元(人民币，下同)。据了解，今年，受特殊天气影响，茂名各个品种荔枝生产均遭遇“小年”，但销售市场火爆，价格坚挺。目前，随着中熟品种白糖罂荔枝的采摘进入尾声卡卡湾平台官方，迟熟品种桂味荔枝也开始上市。

荔枝种植大户莫伟文称，大井镇是茂名高州桂味荔枝主产区，他家果园数十亩，种的都是桂味荔枝树，今年产量锐减至只有500公斤左右。去年桂味荔枝初上市时，最高收购价每公斤约90元，随着上市量的增多，价格几乎每两天便会下降一次，从高位一直下跌至每公斤15元左右。今年则不同，桂味荔枝初上市收购价每公斤约120元，创下数十年来新高，同时，由于产量少，采摘期较短，桂味荔枝“上市即高峰”，价格一直居高不下。
